Changing smiles, changing lives

There are more than 21 million veterans living in the United States and less than 10 million are enrolled for government-based veterans’ healthcare benefits – though most plans don’t include dental benefits. There are another 1.2 million veterans that lack health insurance altogether.

There are more than 21 million veterans living in the United States and less than 10 million are enrolled for government-based veterans’ healthcare benefits – though most plans don’t include dental benefits. There are another 1.2 million veterans that lack health insurance altogether. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that there’s a growing oral care crisis and a shortage of dental treatment in the U.S., especially for those who need it most. Insurance aside, barriers such as location and cost keep even more veterans from visiting a dentist in the past year.

Aspen Dental’s Day of Service is changing that.

Aspen Dental gives back

On Saturday, June 24, 2017, more than 2,500 volunteers in nearly 430 Aspen Dental practices across the U.S. joined forces to provide free dental care to 4,648 veteran patients, marking the fourth consecutive Aspen Dental Day of Service.

Dentists and staff donated their time and skills to offer treatment of the most urgent need of each veteran, working to get them out of acute pain or discomfort. This meant offering on-the-spot services for dental procedures such as fillings, extractions, or denture repairs – basic solutions that aren’t accessible to many veterans.

The ongoing mission

Day of Service is just one component of the Healthy Mouth Movement, an ongoing community giving initiative that was launched in 2014. Since its inception, more than 17,026 patients have received more than $10.3 million worth of free dental care thanks to the generosity of nearly 10,000 volunteers. To further its commitment to veterans, Aspen Dental continued its partnership with Got Your 6, a campaign that empowers veterans and strengthens communities by helping with reintegration in areas including health, education, and leadership.

The Healthy Mouth Movement also includes the cross-country, yearlong tour of the MouthMobile – Aspen Dental’s clinic on wheels that travels to cities all around the U.S.  to provide free dental treatment to veterans in need. The MouthMobile, in partnership with local non-profit organizations, visits communities coast to coast where proper dental care isn’t readily available.

Beyond offering initial treatment at MouthMobile stops, the Healthy Mouth Movement provides awareness of other dental needs and connects patients  with free or low-cost resources in their community so they may continue to address their oral health. Through all of these widespread efforts, Aspen Dental is making a lasting impact, and doing whatever it takes to break down barriers to better care, better smiles and better lives.
