Senior Manager of Accounting Operations - Payroll

As a reflection of our current needs and planned growth we are very pleased to offer an opportunity to join our Finance team as a Senior Manager of Accounting Operations - Payroll. In this role, you will direct the centralized shared services payroll department.  The payroll department supports a complex organizational structure that includes 11,000+ employees and two operating brands with unique pay characteristics. You will operate in a hands-on role at both a strategic and tactical level to assess and anticipate Payroll and customer service needs, recommend solutions, and manage shared resources to deliver results.


  • Provide leadership and oversight for the payroll department, including US payroll processing, compliance, reporting and auditing with a laser focus on accuracy and customer service.
  • Foster and maintain positive relationships with Finance and HR constituents.
  • Acts as a resource, and is proactive in partnering with all support departments, field teams, entities, and brands to improve service delivery and resolve complex issues.
  • Utilizes discretion, initiative, and proactive communications to ensure services continue to meet and exceed customer service quality and productivity standards.
  • Employ various modes of communication to train all levels of the organization on systems, programs, procedures and processes related to expertise.
  • Oversee all critical payroll controls and procedures, including developing and enforcing standards, to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of payroll processing.
  • Continuously analyze federal, state, and local tax compliance regulations and implement changes as necessary to ensure timely compliance in connection with growth. 
  • Support external compliance and 401-K plan audits.  Complete 401-K auditing and workpaper preparation.
  • Design and deploy testing on all pre & post-processing audits to validate payroll accuracy and make any necessary adjustments with the goal of achieving best-in-class accuracy.
  • Provide regular reporting to Finance leadership on compliance with key policies and develop action plans to address non-compliance. 
  • Build effective teams through hiring and evaluation, develop organization capacity and structure, and provide coaching, mentoring, and development opportunities.
  • Develop, maintain, and present department metrics and scorecards to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of payroll operations.
  • Applies project management skills to effectively manage individual and team projects; uses systems to: create project plans; manage project budgets; execute and achieve deliverables.
  • Manage external service providers to address problems, system, and reporting issues.
  • Apply a deep knowledge of payroll related systems to ensure system optimization and continuous improvement as the business scales.  Lead or oversee projects to ensure new functionality or technology are deployed successfully.
  • Research, benchmark, and network on best practices and emerging technology to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Co-manage and maintain the payroll mapping to General Ledger with Finance leadership. 
  • Reconcile payroll reports to the General Ledger. 

Minimum Education and Experience

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in a Finance and/or payroll operations role demonstrating career progression.
  • A minimum of 4 years in a leadership/managerial role.
  • Experience working in a high volume department and growing company.
  • Systems: 
    • Experience in Workday HCM/US Payroll a strong plus
    • Led system upgrades in payroll, time tracking, and/or absence management
  • Proven leadership, interpersonal and relationship-building skills working with HR colleagues to communicate effectively, build consensus, and establish trust.
  • Demonstrate ability to think creatively and critically when solving problems.
  • Solutions-oriented project management skills including thinking and presenting ideas at a strategic level for input as well as ensuring outcomes are delivered and executed on a tactical level.
  • A strong analytical mindset with a detailed focus on presenting data that supports and measures best practices and company goals.
  • A Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) is a plus.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance a plus.
